(Nasdaq: PLCE), today announced sales of $61.0 million for the five-week period ended July 5, 2003, a 23% increase compared to sales of $49.6 million reported for June 2002. Comparable store sales for the five-week period increased 3%, as compared to a 6% decrease in the prior year period. During the month, the Company opened three stores and closed two.

Total sales for the twenty-two weeks ended July 5, 2003, increased 11% to $290.3 million compared to sales of $262.3 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 8%, versus a 10% decrease in the same period last year. Year-to-date, the Company has opened 30 stores and closed two.
