The Children's Place Reports September Sales up 20%; Comparable Store Sales Increased 12%; Company Anticipates Third Quarter Earnings of Approximately $0.58 Per Share

SECAUCUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2004--The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCE), today announced sales of $105.8 million for the five-week period ended October 2, 2004, a 20% increase compared to sales of $88.4 million reported for October 2003. Comparable store sales for the five-week period increased 12%, on top of a 30% increase in the prior year period. During the month, the Company opened four stores.

Total sales for the thirty-five weeks ended October 2, 2004, increased 23% to $607.3 million from $495.2 million last year. Comparable store sales increased 14% versus flat comparable store sales for the same period last year. Year-to-date, the Company has opened 36 stores, and closed two.

The Company stated that based on its September sales results and expectations for October, it anticipates reporting earnings per share of approximately $0.58 for the third quarter ending October 30, 2004, compared to $0.43 per share for the same period last year.

The Company also noted that discussions are continuing with The Walt Disney Company to acquire and operate under a long-term license arrangement The Disney Store retail chain in the United States and Canada.
