The Children's Place Reports January and Fiscal 2002 Sales Results

SECAUCUS, N.J., Feb 6, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCE), today announced sales of $34.4 million for the four-week period ended February 1, 2003, a 2% decrease compared to sales of $35.1 million reported for January 2002.

Comparable store sales for the four-week period decreased 20% as compared to a 7% decrease in the prior year period.

Sales for the thirteen-weeks ended February 1, 2003, were $196.7 million, a 1% decrease from sales of $198.7 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales decreased 19% for the period versus a 6% decrease in the same period last year. During the fourth quarter, the Company opened 16 stores and closed two stores.

Total sales for the fifty-two weeks ended February 1, 2003, increased 2% to $671.4 million from $657.0 million reported in the prior year. Comparable store sales for fiscal 2002 decreased 16% versus an 8% decrease in the prior year. The Company opened 126 stores in fiscal 2002, and closed three stores.

The Company continues to anticipate that earnings per share for the fourth quarter should be in line with its previously stated expectations.
