The Children's Place Reports December 2003 Sales Results; December Sales Increased 16% to $114 Million; Comparable Store Sales Increased 7%

SECAUCUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2004--The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq:PLCE), today announced sales of $114.0 million for the five-week period ended January 3, 2004, a 16% increase over sales of $98.1 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales for the five-week period increased 7% versus a 19% decrease in December 2002.

Sales for the nine-week holiday selling season were $194.9 million, a 20% increase from sales of $162.3 million for the same period last year. Comparable store sales increased 10% for the nine-week period versus a 19% decrease in the same period last year.

For the forty-eight weeks ended January 3, 2004, total sales increased 19% to $758.3 million from $637.1 million last year. Comparable store sales for the year-to-date period increased 3% versus a 16% decrease last year.

The Company stated that based on quarter-to-date sales and improved gross margin results it anticipates earnings per share of approximately $0.50 for the fourth quarter, compared to earnings of $0.09 per share for the comparable quarter last year.

"During the holiday selling season we focused on maximizing gross margin and as a result we anticipate a substantial increase in earnings for the fourth quarter compared to last year."
